It's a great opportunity for student athletes to continue the sport into college. ..As the head coach, and founder of Nevada Orange Crush, a HS clay target shooting team, I look for colleges that give these opportunities to students. ...

Marksmanship, whether it be trap and skeet, target shooting, hunting, and so forth, has been a tradition in this country for 400 years. Rifle and shotgun clubs at our colleges and universities have been commonplace for most of that too. Consider Harvard, the first colonial college, which was founded in the early 1600s; they have had shooting clubs since their founding. In fact, their current club has been in continuous operation since 1883.
Shooting is statistically one of the safest hobbies a person can be engaged in. Furthermore, studies and just plain common sense indicate that those who understand the operation and use of firearms are safer with firearms. Therefore if the Methodists are truly interested in firearms safety as they claim, they should be fully in support of the Simpson club, whose primary mission isn't competition, isn't having fun, but rather teaching firearms safety...And judging by their flawless history, I'd say they're doing a commendable job.
People were enjoying shooting in this country over a hundred years before the Wesley brothers even created Methodism. Maybe they should stick to what they know--religion--mind their own business, and let the Simpson kids continue being safe shooters and model citizens.

This is something that needs to stay at the campus and should be expanded if nothing else. As a responsible gun owner I would like to hope that the board of trustees would realize the difference between gun violence and responsible gun ownership.

I had the honor to be a range safety officer when these kids competed against the Ames team last year. They were both safe, competitive, and confident in their abilities. These young people are the future in both the shooting sports and our society. It would be a shame to take these oppurtunities away from them and future members of this team.

Why in the world would anyone prevent Americans from learning safe handling of firearms and stifle students from good safe competition in the process.

15-year high school trap team shooting coach (retired). The responsibility/respect learned during my career as coach by the students in the program, put them beyond the needs they would require in their future lives.

I believe that the discipline and professionalism of trap shooting and related shooting sports are one of the very best ways to teach our youth a healthy respect for firearms and firearm safety.

The Petition for a Weapons-Free Simpson is not at all opposed to a Club. We believe that the Club should go on as it has over the past few years. However, we do not want weapons stored on our campus as it is a violation of Simpson's gun-free campus policy and the United Methodist Church's designation of weapons-free sanctuary for it's institutions. We do not believe that this Club should become an academic program with the college's scarce monies and resources used to hire a full time coach.
Please be clear, we are not proposing the elimination of this club.
