Quinoa farmers in the Southern Bolivian and Peruvian Altiplano live a life of poverty and hard labour in order to provide the newly popular grain to our grocery stores worldwide. Although the industry is fair trade, the farmers are often tasked with paying for their own fair- trade certification and new necessary machinery, which therefore results in the farmers losing their own money. If there is no change, farmers are going to be unable to provide the grain, nor provide for their families. Our proposed solution to this issue is to lobby for a piece of legislature that requires the leaders of the quinoa industry to give approximately 1-2% of final exported profits directly back to the farmers. This is so that they can cover their newfound costs as well as living costs for them and their families. With this legislation, it is more than likely that the cost of a box of quinoa may increase. We anticipate that this increase would be extremely minimal, approximately 5 cents per box. This seems like a small price to pay as global citizens in order to help those that have been helping us for many years. Sign this petition to show your support for this issue, and to acknowledge that you would be willing to pay an extra (approximately) 5 cents per box of quinoa in order to provide justice for those that cannot do so on their own.

To continue helping the farmers in South America, please consider sending a letter to your local Foreign Affairs Minister. Below is a link to a template that we created to help you format the letter that is to be sent. Thank you for your continued support

I am currently compiling a list of the largest quinoa distributors to contact regarding our proposed 2% profit redirection. Send an email to your regional trade representative today and demand they support fair pricing for Altiplano farmers. Check the petition page for the draft letter template I just uploaded.

This wave of momentum shows that people are ready to demand accountability from the quinoa industry. Take the link below to email your Foreign Affairs Minister right now and tell them these farmers deserve a fair share of the profits.

ALWAYS the way. Massive companies take all the profit while the workers suffer. Enough is enough.

I eat quinoa almost every week. Happy to pay a few pennies more to help the people growing it. Thanks for starting this.

5 cents is nothing. People spend way more than that on useless stuff everyday. Let's make sure these families actually get paid what they deserve.

Hope this actually happens. Tired of reading about farmers being squeezed by big corps while we think we are buying ethical food.

Fix this now. Farmers shouldn't be losing money just to feed the rest of the world.

Ridiculous that they have to pay for their own certification. The industry is just greedy.
