Quinoa farmers in the Southern Bolivian and Peruvian Altiplano live a life of poverty and hard labour in order to provide the newly popular grain to our grocery stores worldwide. Although the industry is fair trade, the farmers are often tasked with paying for their own fair- trade certification and new necessary machinery, which therefore results in the farmers losing their own money. If there is no change, farmers are going to be unable to provide the grain, nor provide for their families. Our proposed solution to this issue is to lobby for a piece of legislature that requires the leaders of the quinoa industry to give approximately 1-2% of final exported profits directly back to the farmers. This is so that they can cover their newfound costs as well as living costs for them and their families. With this legislation, it is more than likely that the cost of a box of quinoa may increase. We anticipate that this increase would be extremely minimal, approximately 5 cents per box. This seems like a small price to pay as global citizens in order to help those that have been helping us for many years. Sign this petition to show your support for this issue, and to acknowledge that you would be willing to pay an extra (approximately) 5 cents per box of quinoa in order to provide justice for those that cannot do so on their own.

To continue helping the farmers in South America, please consider sending a letter to your local Foreign Affairs Minister. Below is a link to a template that we created to help you format the letter that is to be sent. Thank you for your continued support
