The refusal to acknowledge the active genocide and desecration of Palestine is in alignment with the long history of abuses committed by academic institutions and other industrial complexes. As a proud graduate of a program dedicated to bridging and creating space for belonging and human connection, I hope you can find the heart to do better.

As a Goucher alumn, I am beyond disappointed that President Devereaux and the Goucher administration are creating barriers against student protests and demonstrations on campus. During my time at Goucher my classmates and I demonstrated peacefully on campus to raise awareness about issues that were important to us. This includes police brutality in the U.S. and in the state of Maryland, lack of food access on Campus, Lack of racial diversity among faculty, Lack of guidance for first generation college students, and “Pink washing” by the state of Israel. Our student organizations such as the Goucher Women of Color Circle, United Students of Color Coalition, Talq Back, Confronting Our Racism Coalition, and the UMOJA Black student union were active on campus. Goucher students participated in marches in Baltimore City following the murder of Freddie Grey. Even if the school administration disagreed with our stances or the shapes of our demonstrations, we were not stopped from having them. Protocols weren’t drawn around our efforts, to discourage or slow us down (at least not to the extent that is happening now.) We were not threatened or intimidated with institutional response. Prior to my time at Goucher, there have been generations of Goucher students involved with Students for Justice in Palestine. A good friend of mine was part of the Goucher chapter of this organization in the early 2000s. None of this is new. Students and families across the country and across college campuses are protesting the slaughter of tens of thousands of civilians, the sale of weapons of mass destruction to Israel from the U.S., and the transfer of U.S. taxpayer dollars /by the tens of billions/ to “aid” Israel in its slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza and attacks on neighboring countries. These are worthy causes to protest. It is criminal and wrong to target and kill civilians, as the State of Israel’s military leaders and IDF units have done. It is wrong and criminal to target and des

I am extremely disappointed in the college for stifling student’s voices and not acknowledging the clear and horrific genocide perpetrated by Israel. Goucher should be a place of openness and learning, with an ongoing commitment to social justice and peace.

I am ashamed to be an Alum of an institution that supports ethnic cleansing and genocide.

As an Arab alumni and former student activist, I am so horrified by the actions of my alma mater.

Goucher alumni stand with student activists speaking out against the Genocide on Palestinians. Silencing students speaking out against Genocide is the same as upholding and allowing the genocide to continue - it is violence.

I am a past Goucher Alumni, and have had the chance to speak about Goucher to others often. I have always said one thing; the people are powerful and caring, but the institution is harmful and destructive. I have turned perspective students away when asked about attending this college, and while it hurts my heart to do so, I will continue. Goucher College is a place that manifests white supremacy, violence and more in its policies and practices - and it has always stood against the liberation of Palestinians. I can't be more disappointed honestly. May justice prevail, Palestine be free, and Goucher fall in its legacy of oppression.

While enrolled at Goucher I was fired from my position as a peer mentor because of my involvement of on campus activism. It is disappointing to watch the school continue to silence and infantilize the students. The institution is failing to uphold its own ideal of social responsibility. Silencing students is failing to help them develop a “system of personal and professional ethics”. As enrollment continues to drop, what is Goucher actually doing to set itself apart from other, seemingly identical, small liberal arts colleges? How is it helping young learners embrace the challenges one will face while refusing to shy away from the realities of the world and grappling with the complex issues?

I am extremely disappointed (but unfortunately not surprised) that a school that claims “social justice” as one of its core values would actively participate in the silencing of student voices and the denial of genocide. Do better, Goucher.
