I have raised three children that attended Easthampton public schools and now have grandchildren that will soon be enrolled . It was comforting to know that there was a SRO around during a time where my children witnessed gang violence and school shootings that occurred in other parts of the country. At this time ,especially where protests and media coverage have portrayed police as ‘untrustworthy ‘ I feel an SRO ,s presence can be a positive reinforcement in developing a good relationship with young children that will carry on to their adult years.

I have 2 grandchildren in EPS elementary schools and 1 who will be starting WBMS this fall. I am a retired Administrative Assistant to the Principal (NHS) and fully support SROs in schools. I have seen, first-hand, the invaluable services they provide to staff, parents, and students. Notwithstanding the importance of physical safety, there is also the moral and personal support a caring adult figure can offer when students are struggling with feelings of isolation, rejection, and sometimes fear. Police officers are trained to recognize and respond to emergencies, and I witnessed many students and staff being helped by our SRO.

I attended 4 years at EHS with RSO Schadel and I dont think there was one person in that school who disliked him. He was there when no one else was listening or cared. He proved there was nothing to be afraid of and cops were there to help and protect you. In this day in age school shootings are happening everywhere and I wouldn’t feel comfortable if my child was in a school without a RSO

I am in support of having a SRO in our schools. I have seen positive interactions between the current resource officer and students at the high school. I honestly believe that if it were not for officer Rogalski some of these students would not have continued school and graduated. There have been occasions when a student would be having a hard time in class and come to the office, speak with Officer R and then return to class with a better attitude.

When I had a teen in school the admin attempted to cover up an assault until we brought it up to the SRO who took immediate action. SRO is a MUST!!

Please keep the SRO in our schools!! This is an asset and it would truly be a shame to not utilize a valuable resource, especially in the current climate we find ourselves in. To remove the SRO only furthers the negative narrative that is currently plaguing our police department.

While I support an SRO in the school, I highly recommend review of best practices related to SRO’s involvement in school disciplinary situations and the development of a clear and concise Memorandum of Understanding signed by all parties.

SROs are so important to helping develop a healthy relationship with students and officers in the community. They help ensure protection in our schools and also serve as people for the youth to look up to while helping instill moral values. I always felt at ease having a SRO within the school system.
