i am strongly in favor of parent teacher conferences at Sandburg and do not feel the student led reflections are an acceptable replacement at all

Tougher to drive home the constructive criticism of a student when they are in the same meeting - they are not adults yet and some kids simply can't handle it in a constructive way. The parents should be able to filter and communicate the critiques inside their own home to the benefit of their kids.

A student led conference does not foster a caring, parent-teacher working relationship. The Teacher at the conference could not answer my questions pertaining to a subject she does not teach. She suggested I contact teacher(s) via email. I did and did not get a response. Also, the slide show presented by student seemed too long and redundant with no useful outcome.

It is important that we as parents have a face to face meeting with our child's teacher. In person communication with my child's teacher is extremely important as we not only hear about how our child/children are doing, but it gives us as parents an opportunity to establish some sort of relationship/partnering in our child's education. This will not happen over paper and if it does, it is quite robotic and superficial. I think it is great for our kids to establish goals and become more responsible for their own decision making and outcomes, but these kids are still in middle school. That being said, I have other questions about my child's development in general, how they are doing socially, academically and adjusting to the whole middle school process. This is a conversation that should be had one on one with my child/children's different teachers, not through paper/email conversation. I think the idea to compromise and allow both student goal setting and parent interaction is more than fair. This pushback to compromise seems unreasonable.

I do not support this as the only conference option. A student presentation has value but is not a substitute for a parent teacher conference.

My kids both went to Jefferson, Sandburg and York HS. They are in college now. I felt that the parent -teacher conferences were very important. I valued the time to meet and discuss my daughters progress with their teachers.

Parent-teacher conferences are an irreplaceable early warning system when a student is beginning to struggleg academically, emotionally or socially. And almost as importantly, it is too often the only chance for parents and teachers to provide each other with positive feedback on what is going well, motivating, energizing and empowering faculty, students and parents to pursue excellence in education in a way that standardized testing printouts, emails and other numerical and/or impersonal data never can and never will.

I am in full support of parent teacher conferences. While I enjoyed my daughters slide show earlier this year, I would much rather hear from her teachers regarding her progress at school.

My kids and I know how they are doing in school. Meeting with their teachers in person through parent teacher conferences has been crucial for me in finding out how they are adjusting to moving from outside the district both academically and socially, finding out how they interact with their peers, and how they respond to their teachers. I understand that I can contact teachers anytime but the parent/teacher conference is the most efficient way to do this. It eliminates lengthily & time consuming back and forth emails and endless phone-tags. It also gives the teachers an opportunity to tell the parents about things that may not be major enough to contact a parent about outside of a conference situation. And it gives the parents a feel for the personalities and priorities of each of their children's teachers.

I didn't get much value from the student-led conference - my kids already share that info with me at home. I really missed getting feedback from the teachers.
