Mr. Peterson is, indeed, a first-rate and compassionate teacher. That his job is in jeopardy--or that some individuals think it should be--is wrong in every way.

There are only a handful of teachers throughout my life that I would consider influential. Mr. Peterson was one of them because he respected us as students and young adults at the same time and really pushed us to a level that others didn't. On a few occasions I was in tears. Some from laughter and others from frustration. I believe good things happen when you're pushed outside of your comfort zone and make you grow as a person, student and writer. My love of writing (creative and academic) sprouted from his class. I'm thankful for my time with him!

It's not right to force ignorance on people. You can't censor, it doesn't work. Settle for excellence instead.

The parents and administration should be thrilled that a teacher wants to stimulate challenging discussion by using contemporary and relevant literature as a tool.

Students need to be introduced to new works by a wise, engaged teacher. Censorship just makes students unable to participate in the world at large.

Simply reading literature that exposes uou to different views cannot harm you, so rather than banning books in fear of their ideas, simply take the opportunity to read it with your kids and engage in a frank discussion to share your own views. banning books is a sure fire way to make sure your kids read them. This brave and dedicated teacher is giving you that opportunity. Celebrate him; don't punish him.

Mr. Peterson helped me flourish in a subject that has been my kryptonite my entire life. And part of the reason why I made so much progress in his class was because of the difficult content that he chose to explore. That difficult content allowed for myself and my classmates to develop critical reading and thinking abilities that placed us far above other students. Much of the content we read in Mr. Peterson's class are literary works that I haven't encountered again until College. I believe there is something to be said about a teacher who can successfully teach college level texts in a high school freshman english class.
