the best trachers are the ones that go outside the normal everyday lessons. By doing so the can reach students that r otherwise r not interested or challenged by the standard curriculum. i didnt no have him as a student nor did i attened this school but as a lover of reading and mentored by some amazing teachrrs that didnt teach in the box i fully support this teacher.

Honestly, it's amazing to me that in this day parents would be upset with unorthodox teaching styles. I would have thought that thinking outside the box was hard to come by these days. It would be sad to lose a teacher who still helps students develop critical thinking skills. I had recently made an attempt to contact Mr. P to thank him for the impact he had on my life.

Dave Peterson did no less than change my life. He showed a level of devotion to us as his students that I have used since as a standard by which I measure my own dedication to my profession and the people around me. I can not speak highly enough about his teaching methods or character.

If it wasn't for Mr. Peterson I probably would have not even made it through my Freshman year at Arcadia. He lit a passion within me for writing and literature that still dwells in me today. He related with his students at a personal level to keep us engaged and was more of a mentor than just my teacher. His class gave me an outlet to help me conquer obstacles that I had been experiencing at that time. Without his class I do not know how I would have gained the courage to overcome those obstacles and am truly grateful that I had the opportunity to be his student.

Mr. Peterson was the first and only teacher to treat his students like they were capable of thought and discussion. His class was so much more than a class. It's where I learned to have thoughtful discussion. It would be a shame to take that away from future students.

Mr. Peterson was not only the greatest English teacher I ever had, but the most inspiring teacher to this day. His curriculum has followed me still as I'm in college and was the best resource I was ever given.

The materials that are presented by Mr. Peterson requires students to think at a higher level and force students to face the dilemmas and challenges of the real world. The world is a harsh place outside of high school and we must support our teachers who are pushing their students to analyze and think on levels that they will face as adults. if we do not we are only setting our students up for failure. Mr. Peterson was the only teacher at Arcadia High School who made an impact on my life after high school.

Mr. P was the first teacher I had that I felt really cared about the education and future of his students. The material he teaches isn't used to give us a mediocre freshmen English education, but instead is used to make us think about ourselves and the world through different perspectives. If Mr. P is taken away from the kids at Arcadia, the school district would be doing a huge disservice to all those that could have taken his class.

The notion I have to sign a petition over this is offensive to me. How dare you challange books based on content. Assuming you believe your kids are capable of post graduate work I assure you they will read more offensive material. If you would like me to comment on how entertaining I found any Bronte sisters work I read 14 years ago I welcome the opportunity. Be grateful your kids have found literature they find interesting as it might, just might, encourage them to read.

I still have the novel that Mr. P gave me at the end of my sophomore year and I read it at least once a year. He is truly an amazing and inspirational teacher. He deserves better than this!

I used to see Mr.Peterson at the gym on 32nd and camelback. Thats how I found out that teachers are real poeple and have a life outside of school. I fully support this.

I only spent a year and a half at Arcadia, and the only class that was memorable was Mr. P's. It was challenging, yet interesting. He cares for each of his students and their literary growth. I will never forget the lessons he taught and the fun our class had. To this day I still have the individually picked out book he signed and gave to each student at the end of year. Such a nice personal touch from a teacher who cares.

Thank you all who are taking a stand for a brilliant and big hearted teacher,. Books like Junot Doaz's Drown are seminal texts of the full American experience. As Junot himself says "This is covert white supremacy in the guise of educational standard-keeping—nothing more, nothing less. Given the sharp increase of anti-Latino rhetoric, policies, and crimes in Arizona and the rest of the country, one should not be surprised by this madness and yet one is. "

I am a writer, editor, and instructor of undergraduate creative writing at New York University; without teachers assigning material like Diaz's Drown, our country will soon be without any writers at all -- a major point of literature is to teach empathy, not to obscure realities and forward conservative moral agendas. Grow up, Arcadia High School.
