Investigative journalists are under threat all over the world. The threats in Britain may be less than elsewhere. That makes it all the more contemptible that the authorities are considering deporting a witness to truth into such danger.

Amitt is an important journalist making a significant contribution in his field. Quality journalism is at more of a premium than ever and the UK can't afford to lose him.

Solidarity forever. Journalists are too often the targets of those who wish to hide the truth - just for doing their jobs.

I urge the UK authorities to grant asylum on human rights grounds to my fellow NUJ member and journalist Amitt Bhatt when his case is heard this Friday 28 October. As an investigative journalist who has covered human rights abuses in Kashmir, Amitt faces prison and/or torture – or even murder – should he be forcibly returned to India. Please grant him safe harbour so he may continue his important work.

Amitt Bhatt should be protected from any risk of torture and extra-judicial punishment. UK should provide him with a safe haven.

Any journalist who is kidnapped, tortured and faces further violence must be granted aslyum, lest we be party to such inhumane treatment.

Amitt Bhatt is in real danger of harm if he is forcibly removed to India because of his work as an investigative journalist there. He must remain in the UK for safety's sake.
