Surely the NUT members should decide who is to represent them, not their Headteacher.

This is at the heart of who should protect and defend our members. If Headteachrs have to decide then they will most likely go for someone who they see as a YES person. Members will quickly lose trust in union representation and look elsewhere. This will be of very little benefit to schools and will end up costing them more. Members must be abl to trust their Reprsentatives.

This is the forst time I have heard of such a disgusting attack on a union official. It beats attacks on the miners' leaders under Thatcher. No-one then suggested they had no right to represent their members, only that they were wrong and wrecking the country. This action is a disgraceful attack on freedom under the law for all workers. It must be resisted else it will be used to diminish employees' rights

I too worked for Haringey, and had issues with the council as a resident, taking them to the Local Government Ombudsmen. We don't give up our rights as residents when we are employees.

Membership of free and democratic trade unions is a fundamental human right. This includes the right of union members to chose their own representative.

I believe this is a test case for the whole NUT. In my view if the head teachers don't pay in, the Labour Council should pay the costs themselves for Julie's secondment. The agreement is with them even if the head teachers pay towards it, as they should. If the Schools then don't pay in is will be up to the Council to pursue the money from the Schools every time Julie or another elected officer represents a member there.
All preparation time and travel could be calculated by the hour and it could work out a lot more expensive for the schools that don't initially pay in. The better solution would be for the Schools to pay in and behave in the interest of the members in their schools.
I would also like to see members from every school that has not paid in to be balloted for action in order to make the head teachers behave in a proper way. In advance of this school groups should have meetings to indicate in advance that they are prepared to take action. If they won't, then Im afraid this poison will spread.

It is the same old tactic. This was attempted in Brent when the Authorities decided that THEY should choose who represents teachers instead of teachers choosing their rep. It failed miserably. Teachers will always defend their right to choose who represent them and in Haringey it is Julie Davies.

Julie Davis has supported both myself and other people in their time of need. She is a well respected member of the NUT and worth fighting for.
