Dear Honorable DC Council,

We are writing you today, as a DC residents, to express our support for “The Save Good Food Amendment Act of 2017”. We are greatly concerned that approximately 40% of our food in DC is thrown away, while 15% of families in DC experience some form of food insecurity. We believe that this is an injustice to families who are food insecure, to the food system that sacrifices so much to produce our food, and to the environment because food sent to the landfill becomes one of the leading causes of greenhouse gases.

We believe that “The Save Good Food Amendment Act of 2017” is a logical and rational approach to reducing food waste in DC while significantly increasing the amount of food reaching people who need it. By expanding liability coverage and creating tax incentives, we believe this will increase the number of businesses that donate food in DC. Improving DC date labeling regulations will allow a significant amount of healthy and good-tasting food to be diverted from the landfill to food pantries. Further, allowing the Department of Health and the Office of Waste Diversion to develop official food donation policies will help alleviate confusion and reduce apprehension around food donation in the District.

We are requesting that you support this bill and move it forward for public comment and Council review.

As the director of a food rescue agency, I strongly support this legislation that will encourage food donation by expanding liability coverage and tax incentives. The legislation will also increase awareness about the amount of food waste and how we can all work toward change. I'm happy to promote the Save Good Food Amendment Act of 2017.

As a regular attendee and participant in the D.C. Food Policy Council, I support this legislation and hope it can move forward soon for review and a full vote by the City Council. Reducing food waste is a win-win-win for the environment, businesses and citizens of the District. Thank you.

I strongly support consideration of this legislation. I'm a DC resident who believes that new incentives and rules can promote smarter and more efficient use of food in our city.
