Brenda's role was essential in dismantling the very systems of racial injustice that persist not just in our communities, but within DEQ itself. This is more than a wrongful termination—it’s a direct attack on the supposed progress toward equity.. Which time and again has proven to be performative at best. I stand in full solidarity with Brenda and demand accountability for this blatant injustice.

I’ve known Brenda since Jr. High. She is a bright human and would do anything for our country that includes protecting the environment for others to enjoy. Please allow her to be rehired. We need her and more like her to represent those who wish to have a healthy and clean planet to live on.

I have a JD w/ a certificate in environmental law, and have been in the field for 15+yrs. It is so disheartening to read this, as it is part of a much larger pattern in the environmental movement. I value my nonprofit partnerships w/ DEQ, but please do better.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen behavior like this from DEQ management. It’s time to change this pattern.

I've been here almost 18 years, and DEQ is barely more diverse than it used to be. Even that's not saying much; in 2007, there were only a handful of Black employees, and all but one were at the administrative assistant level. There's a saying that "every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets." I'm just so disappointed that, despite protestations of good intentions, DEQ has failed to improve its systems to attract and support BIPOC employees. Something in the system has to change.

This pattern of mistreating BIPOC employees and mishandling DEI and EJ systems at DEQ is ridiculous. I urge DEQ leadership to take action to right these wrongs. Please reinstate the wrongfully terminated EJ Coordinator as a DEQ employee.

These actions from leadership and our director Leah Feldon prove that their rhetoric around DEI at DEQ is purely performative. The data shows that the people fired (or that the agency has seriously attempted to fire) during trial service OVERWHELMINGLY identify as BIPOC—at an agency where BIPOC employees only make up a fraction of the workplace. And In each of these cases there has been evidence that the allegations against the employee were false and/or made with racist motivations. This inherently racist behavior, particularly perpetuated by Brian Boling who has had knowledge of or held a major role in all of these events, must end. We will not allow our BIPOC employees to be treated this way by leadership or management. Meet the demands of this petition.
