Surrendering to racists and propagandists will only embolden them. This entire episode just proves the need for DEI for staff and students and that Critical Race theory be taught in General Education courses.

While a graduate student at JMU I learned the value of creating inclusive spaces. Let's not abandon those important lessons now. This situation is evidence that creating inclusive spaces will always have pushback, which is why things like diversity training are absolutely necessary!

I find it really embarrassing that JMU’s leadership team is scared of a Fox News article. The staff assigned to this training are incredibly intelligent, educated, and passionate enough about supporting students that they would not lead an initiative that wasn’t going to be in the best interest of ALL students. So the fact that the university did not stand by them or their training is truly a test to how little they value their employees and how little they’re willing to give up to progress social justice initiatives.

If the mission of a university is to prepare its students to be thoughtful and engaged citizens, programs which teach students to navigate the complexities of identity are absolutely part of that mission. I seriously regret that my alma mater has approached this moment with such trepidation.
