Kanal PIK’s target audience is the Caucasus region, the entire post-Soviet space and the millions of Russian-language speakers who have emigrated to the West. But, first and foremost, PIK’s viewers are ethnic minorities living in Georgia. We would like to note that by closing Kanal PIK, the GPB is violating the very statutes that govern its broadcasting rights and responsibilities. In so doing, it has denied 400,000 Georgian residents their right to information. This includes ethnic Ossetians, Abkhaz, Russians, Armenians, Azeris, Greeks, Ukrainians and more. Kanal PIK has suspended operations. Among the justifications the Georgian Public Broadcaster has given for the channel’s closure is an “uncoordinated protest and open demarche,” referring to the questions Kanal PIK journalists asked during a live broadcast we called, “We Are Silent in Protest.” We appeal to you to support the fundamental democratic freedoms of speech and expression. We are journalists and we believe that it is our duty to ask questions, including inconvenient ones. If a television company is closed due to questions asked by its journalists, we believe it is fitting to call this action “censorship.”
