Many of the Austin High parents, teachers and staff are concerned about proposed changes that AISD is considering in order to address the huge budget shortfall. These changes will impact all of us but some of the areas that could be specifically affected by raising the student to teacher ratio to 30:1 are:

  • Larger class sizes
  • Losing as many as five AHS teachers (each year)
  • Certain elective classes will no longer be offered
  • More difficulty in making student schedules
  • More difficulty in changing schedules

This 30:1 will not support the staffing needs of the Academies at Austin High. We ask that you join us in advocating for and supporting Austin High. By signing this petition you are asking AISD to provide staffing in the Austin High BTO to support the staffing needs of the Academies at Austin High.

30:1 will stretch us too thin. Some classes by definition will be smaller, so that means that other classes, which already contain well over 30 students will balloon even larger. The most at-risk kids, ELLs, SPED and 504 students can easily fall through the cracks and teachers' ability to give meaningful, personalized feedback to students will be decreased even more than it has.

Increasing the ratio will especially impact Special Education, ELL, 504, and economically disadvantaged students!
