As your course rep this year, I have gaged a feeling of dissatisfaction with the academic rigour and levels of engagement with the GVS module.
I am going to approach the Head of Sociology (Ricky Gee) and ask that there is a rethink of the way the module is taught, or to change the module all together.
- The module lacks focus- we don't go deeper than the surface of gender issues, moving too fast through the topics
- Lack of clear direction and guidance
- The two hour sessions are not beneficial.
- The module is not taught in an engaging way- videos are a main method of teaching.
- Discussions are not structured and therefore the relevance of the video is often missed.

The lectures are honestly just a waste of time. We spend two hours watching random clips with zero context or actual discussion. It feels like a total lack of effort from the department and I’m sick of paying tuition for this.
I too didn't choose this module and also feel that it lacks direction or focus. There are set readings every week that, while accessible, seem to have little relevance to the first assessment of writing a blog around a contemporary issue. The first assessment of writing a 'blog' - one that is bolstered by academic theory seems to contrast with the very nature of what a 'blog' is: a space or website written in an informal or conversational/free style. As for the 2nd assessment, of course I can't comment too much on the content as we are still in term 1 and we will undoubtedly cover this area more in term 2. All in all, I would agree that, thus far, the module does seem to lack direction and the 2 hour 'workshops' often seem to last a lifetime. As for the 'academic rigour' of the module, if we are to take the word as meaning 'thorough', I would argue that the content is actually quite thorough. The problem comes when you assess the relevance, particularly in relation to what actually matters at the end - the assessments.

I didn't choose to do this module and feel as though I've lost my choice in what I wanted to do and where I wanted my studies to go. So far I've been doing a silent protest by not attending the class, but doing the work of the overall course demands it. I've been really frustrated by this and hope this can be resolved.
