As the Vice President of the Organization of International Protocol Professionals and a protocol professional who witnessed the conception (and evolution) of the idea of designating 11 May as World Protocol Day, I highly support the petition for UN recognition, which would not only be well deserved, but would also be an act serving our common good.

Protocol, or the following of protocol helps to maintain 'order' and reduce/prevent misunderstandings at any given time in both informal and formal situations.

Employees overwhelmingly prefer a workplace with a culture that is respectful, civil. It beats any ping-pong tables or free food.
I volunteer for an NGO called 'World Civility Index' measuring soft skills such as social etiquette, empathy, intercultural awareness so a company can use for internal performance measurement.
