This decision creates more traffic - leading to increased pollution, carbon footprint, congestion and also degradation of the local area in a variety of ways, including ruining a small local area. The costs outweigh the benefits so significantly that it is impossible to understand why the decision was made, particularly as it contravenes existing planning policies.

The problem with the Van Hage site is the access,the A1170 is a single lane road, used by Ware residents to access the A10 ,parents of school children from Ware and Hoddesdon who attend the village school because there are no school places in either town. Waitrose leaving Hertford will destroy the town, so many shops will move away.

This was a perverse decision contrary to planning policy. There is no economic case for another supermarket, yet alone on precious green belt. It will have a devastating impact on Hertford town centre. We need to build the economic and social capital of the town not destroy it with an unnecessary, unwanted, environmentally damaging out of town scheme.

The area would be under threat of losing more Green Belt land to developers and become a massive conurbation. The nature of our country towns is being destroyed. Yet another route in and out of Ware would become congested by supermarket traffic. The area is becoming saturated with supermarkets when more and more customers are choosing to have home deliveries anyway.

The proposed ‘out-of town’ supermarket will have a serious adverse effect on Hertford Town centre. The Secretary of State should carefully consider this perverse decision made by the EHDC planning committee against the Council’s own planning policies and against the recommendations of its own officers.

The integrity of the local towns needs to be supported by central government there is clearly no need for any more "out of town" shopping in this condensed and already congested area. The Green Belt should be preserved and this decision is completely against any guidelines or popular opinion.

I live in Hertford and think this a bad move for the town centre we already have a large Asda in Ware, Sainsburys in Hertford and Tescos do we really need an out of town supermarket which will just destroy the town - we already have enough empty shops. I also think it is just greed on the behalf of the Van Hague owners.

We lost two shops in the 70s in Ware thanks to supermarkets. We now have an outlet for our products in Byrons. It would not be fair on them either.
