We the undersigned call on the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to 'Call-In' for full review the decision to allow a supermarket to be built on Van Hage's site in Great Amwell, recognising the decision was made contrary to planning policies that protect our town centres and preserve the green belt.

I honestly cannot believe how fast this is moving since I started the page (my laptop battery is dying and I have not had a proper cup of tea all morning) but seeing the reaction to the Van Hage site proposal just confirms that I am not the only one completely fed up with these ignored planning policies. It feels like people are finally waking up to what is happening near the green belt and that gives me a lot of hope that we might actually get someone to listen to us.

To take away Waitrose from Hertford is taking away the simple pleasure experienced by many of our older generation. To hop on the bus most days and walk a short way to shop for their treats and essentials is key to so many. Please do not take this away from them.
Great Amwell is an oasis between Hertford, Ware and Hoddesdon. Van Hages were given a special dispensation many years ago to develop their business on Green Belt land, and have profited well from it. Further development must be stopped.
Parking at van Hages is bad at the best of times, with a supermarket on site it will be even worse. The impact of extra traffic on the approach road will be dreadful. Do we really need another Supermarket as we have so many in the surrounding towns.
Completely irrational decision by local councillors when planning officers recommended the scheme for refusal. The move could devastate Hertford town centre and create traffic problems around Van Hages, completely against sustainable development principles.
This development should never be allowed- green belt land, catastrophic effect on Hertford and ware town centres, increased need for car usage and disenfranchisement of elderly less mobile shoppers. Waitrose should be ashamed of themselves for pushing this through.
Waitrose is very convenient for many people who rely on the local bus service to shop in Hertford. It is a short walk from the bus yard to the store and is ideally situated for elderly shoppers. They would sorely miss this store.

I fear for our town if Waitrose moves out. The store is the heart of Bircherley Green and draws many people to the town who then go on to visit its other shops and many cafes. The move to Great Amwell would be a disaster and against all planning wisdom.
