Hello! Thank you for visiting my petition! The school board in Superior Wisconsin is choosing to follow a state statute that says if a child resides two miles or further from school, they are eligible to ride the school bus. Currently school bus services are NOT available for children that live within two miles or less from the school, due to lack of state funding for transportation, according to the school board. This is a problem that MUST be changed!
Wisconsin law allows for possible danger routes to be reviewed, and if the sheriffs office deems these routes dangerous for students, the school board can provide state funded bus services. State law calls these: Unusually hazardous transportation areas (UHT Area). Currently there are more than 80 registered sexual offenders that live within the city of Superior. 61 of them, are within two miles of Northern Lights Elementary, Superior Middle School, Superior Senior High School and Great Lakes Elementary. While many parents have vehicles and are able to accommodate driving their children to and from school, many other parents do not have that option. Sexual offenders, coupled with the extreme northern Wisconsin winter weather and traffic, this is clearly NOT a safe area for our children to walk to school.
By signing this petition, I am seeking to raise awareness to the situation, and support for the change that needs to happen! If you, like myself and many others, believe our children and I.E.P. (individual education program) students need to have safe school bus transportation available within the two mile radius, please take the few minutes to show your support by signing my petition. Together we can make a difference for our children! Thank you!

I have been hearing from so many of you who are terrified to let your children walk past these neighborhoods during the winter months. I have spent the last few days pulling maps together to show the school board exactly where these danger zones overlap with our bus routes. We cannot let them ignore the reality of what our kids face on the walk to school every morning.

Seeing this momentum grow has been truly overwhelming for my family and me. It gives me so much hope to see that our community recognizes the genuine danger our children face walking these routes during the winter months.

This is in response to Diana's comment about it taking tax dollars to fund a such a program, well I say who cares what it costs to keep our kids safe! Compromising our childrens health and safety should never be the answer to our budget shortfalls! Every month Our government has & still is spending 10x what it would cost to transport every grade school age child to and from school for a year, on our military presence over in Iraq & on air strikes on ISIS. That's where the answers are for our budget shortfalls. So I ask you, Diana, what's more important?
i used to walk 1 mile and i felt like a popsicle by the time i got there, i used to miss school because of the walk
We went through this when they my children were young and they opened Great Lakes Elementary. We were told in the beginning that ALL children would be bussed. That's how they got us to vote for the then new school. Once it opened, the cancelled the bussing "due to funding" & and the construction of the "safe path". Our kids had to cross Belknap, 5th St. and & 21st to get to the safe path as we were inside the 2 mile limit - as the crow flies. Several of us got together and fought it. We attended every school board meeting possible regarding the matter. We eventually did get the bussing....however it only lasted a couple years. So FIGHT, FIGHT & FIGHT for this!!
My fiance's son is 1.8 miles away at our house and it takes him 45 mins to get there in winter.
Being a graduate of SSHS myself and remembering how cold it was walking almost 2 miles to school was brutal. I have several nieces and nephews in the district with the same dilemma. Parents of those children also have work conflicts and are not able to drive them to school. Please expand this policy.Currently it is not fair..
This should be a no-brainer...find the funds!
Elementary students shouldnt b walking every student should b bused not all parents have cars or they have to leave for work before school starts

Elementary age students should NOT have to walk across highways to get to school, nor be expected to walk a long way in our cold winters. Years ago, it wasnt as big of an issue because we had neighborhood schools! I would even be willing to pay a fee for this service!
