Gwithian would not be the same without stopping for a coffee at Sunset Surf, been going there for years.

If I was a neighbor and had to put up with this monstrosity ruining my peace and tranquility I would not like it. Everyone forgets that this is in a residential area not some touristy high street. Personally if I lived next to the place I would just have a constant supply of horse manure delivered to keep my garden looking nice. That would keep the punters away!

sunset surf are the only on site shop for cold and hungry surfers at Gwithian. Any risk to the business to some extent risks the status of Gwithian as a surf destination. I think the changes are tasteful and appropriate and benefit the facilities available.

It would be a travesty if retrospective planning was not granted for what appear to be a tasteful refurbishment, entirely fitting the local architecture.

The Sunset surf is an asset to the area. There are not many amenities in the area and if the Sunset Surf should be forced to close due to retrospective planning application being turned down it would be a great shame. The loss of jobs would also be a shame.
The cafe looks great after the refurbishment, services great food and offers fab service. I really hope the cafe can remain open as for my husband and I it is the main attraction in the area to head for after a long walk on the beach.

Laura: They DID apply for planning permission and were REFUSED way back in July 2014.
Mr Bell IGNORED the Council decision and went ahead anyway. You can read the original REFUSAL here:

I am writing to strongly object to the the retrospective planning application made on behalf of the Sunset Surf Cafe, 10 Gwithian Towans - PA15/05086.
Although my family and I do not live in the vicinity we have regular use of one of the chalets on the Towans and spend a lot of time there every year. Our ties with the area go back over 60 years and therefore we understand the special nature of the Towans and the need for sensitive development.
I believe that if planning permission is granted it will set a very poor precedent for other development on the towans, paving the way for inappropriate development across the towans landscape which does not comply with the previous planning policy or the design guide principles currently under consultation. In fact I would have thought that if the Sunset Surf had applied for planning permission before they had carried out the works they would not have recieved approval - perhaps they believed that retrospective planning would be easier to obtain?
The main reasons why I beleive the application should be rejected are as follows;
The plot has been excavated and levelled to form new rooms underneath the greatly extended decking. This crude level of construction is totally inappropriate to the Towans and contravenes guiding principles of previous planning policy
The decking has been built higher than existing boundaries, is not in keeping with the local context and does not promote neighbourliness. From the deck you can clearly see into the neighbours property which I believe is unfair especially as the deck is used for commercial use rather than private neighbour to neighbour overlooking. The decking did not need to be extended if the reason for them to rebuild it was 'storm damage' as they state. If it simply needed repairing why wasn't it repaired to its original condition? I worry that they are using 'storm damage' as an excuse to extend their premisses for commercial gain. There is no reason why the deck should h

A thriving local business that does our County credit. The dunes are of course a beautiful spot and planning should be a well considered process. All the more reason to look at the bigger picture here that a business fronting onto a large council run car park should have it's planning permission granted. The council should be supporting local businesses through difficult times, not bringing uncertainty to such a large amount of locals.

This place has grown slowly but remained a laid back and cool place to go from the beach since it first opened. It needs to be there !

A typical response by the local planning authority in blocking investment which brings much needed cash into the Cornish economy!! I have used your cafe for many years and it is a great benefit to the Gwithian experience. I can't see why it would be controversial!

After visiting Gwithian for the first time a few years ago I have returned quite a few times to Surf. I have really enjoyed the food and drink supplied by Sunset surf. The premises have been constantly upgraded and are a first class facility. They support surfing here and have offered good safety advice. There are few facilities in the close area and they should be supported for the first class services they supply.

Myself and my family and friends have spent many happy times at this café and were devastated when it appeared to have been destroyed by the storms of 2013/14. Credit to the owners for their hard work and initiative in rebuilding. It would be a great shame if sunset Surf were to closedown because of red tape.

Save this cafe why why would you want to close it, it offers good service for holiday visitors and locals,cant see any benefit in its closure.

been coming to sunset surf for many years during our Cornish holidays, since our children were very small, and now just us and the dog! it is, and always should be , part of the wonderful surroundings, and apart from anything else, there is nothing better than sitting outside, enjoying the amazing views and equally amazing food. Good luck!!!
