Please do not allow this excellent cafe to close due to the planning being rejected. We visit every morning for a coffee when in Cornwall, it is the most friendly and relaxing cafe fabulous views. The staff great. Gwithian needs to keep it.

Respectfully Bob, the information you've written above is inaccurate. You are of course entitled to voice your opinion in this very public forum - but as you can see are in the tiny minority of individuals that oppose the changes made to Sunset Surf. Happy to talk specifics regarding your comments. Please see below:
As we have previously stated in the planning submissions (available to view online at the Cornwall Council Planning Portal) and in the accompanying information with this (and other) petitions - we were advised & encouraged to complete the repairs to the significant storm damage, as quickly as possible to ensure the business was able to trade again after the winter storms of 2013/14. Had we not done this, we would have certainly had to close the business back in March/April 2014. Therefore your comment that we "were refused permission but went ahead anyway" is entirely wrong.
Not sure what "new rooms" you are referring to? Have you actually visited Sunset Surf before and after the changes?
Also confused by the "wrong materials" comment. The entire building had to be retained with concrete block & steel to stop it from collapsing from the undermining of the foundations (timber floor beams resting on traditional padstones on sand) due to the unprecedented heavy rainfall we experienced during the winter storms of 2013/14. Although not strictly advisable under the old planning guidelines (TM8), their use was entirely necessary to ensure the original building (1930's) and cafe addition (1950's) was saved. The entire building (both old sections and new additions designed to strengthen the existing & unstable build-lines) was then made level & plumb, strengthened, insulated to modern standards (at great expense) and then clad in Western Red Cedar (a widely & traditionally used building material on Gwithian Towans).
As for "the views of our neighbours" we have actually opened up the view from the South Elevation by removing the old outbuild

Support local businesses! !!! These guys have been here forever and are well supported by locals and holidaymakers alike, to put their business at risk is shameful! !!!!

if the council turn this down. they are making a very stupid mistake. Sunset surf has been a valuable resting place for thousands of locals and tourists. Please dont destroy this important part of Gwithian life

Concentrate on what matters ie stop agreeing loads of new houses with no additional primary school provisions leave this great cafe and business alone

This cafe is a glorious and much needed facility on this busy stretch of beach. The works undertaken are attractive, and highly appropriate to the setting, in no way detracting from the unique built environment. The business attracts customers from both the community and vistors, provides local jobs particularly attractive to young people, and encourages use of the adjacent local authority car park, thereby generating income. I fully support the retrospective planning application.

There is no doubt how valuable this business is ALL YEAR ROUND. I am local and visit as much in winter as summer. There must be a compromise achievable, change the look a bit or something to keep everyone happy and maintain the integrity of the planning law.

Retrospective planning permision is not the issue here. The Law is! The cafe owners were refused permision but went ahead anyway and built new rooms, decking, added new roof areas, used the wrong materials, ingnored the views of their nieghbours etc. The UK planning laws in the UK are there for a reason. I can't see the council backing down on this or there will be a free-fall all in Cornwall.
