The school board just announced they are keeping the sixth grade at the elementary school. I never imagined this would actually happen but it is all because of the people who stepped up and spoke out. Please keep an eye on future board agendas just to ensure this decision stays …

There is a proposal to move the 6th grade students in to the High School building. Many parents are opposed to this proposal, and would like the 6th grade to remain at the elementary. We are concerned for the safety and well being of our children. The high school building does not allow for satisfactory segregation of the sixth graders from the high school students. We do not feel it is in the best interest of our children, as young as ten years old, to be subjected to high school at such a fragile, and impressionable age.

We feel that a petition is the best opportunity to demonstrate opposition to the proposed move, and implore board members to reject the proposal.

I have been reading through your messages and the stories about your own experiences in middle school are truly eye-opening. It is clear that this is about more than just a building because you all care so deeply about protecting the environment our children grow up in. I am just a person who wanted to start a conversation but this is clearly becoming something much larger than I ever imagined.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people joined this cause today. It started as a small worry in my mind and seeing everyone come together like this is truly humbling.

RESEARCH SHOWS: Emotionally, psychologically, the 6th graders DO NOT need to be mixed with high schoolers. There is PLENTY of room in the elementary/middle school to keep the 6th graders where they are, along with moving the 7th and 8th grade back.

Way too young to mingle with 18 year old adult students. There is no way that the school can guarantee the safety of the children.

I believe that kids that young shouldnt be in high school. They will be exposed to alot of things, kids of an older age will be doing differently. The attitudes of lids older can be damaging to children of this age. There is to much drama and bullying and stereotypes in children in high school. I feel exposing children to those types of environments will dramatically alter their behavior and could ulimately do more harm then good

My oldest daughter is in 1st grade this year and my youngest in Preschool, both at Summerfield. I do not agree with moving 6th grade to the high school. It's bad enough as it is that the principal splits her time between both schools. So I especially don't like that there isn't even a full time principal at either school! Sounds like a BAD idea!

Moving the 6th grade is just wrong. My child is in 7th grade and I hate the fact he has to be around the influence of much older children. We were told the 7th and 8th grades would be seperate from the high schoolers but that never happened. Too much of an age difference to be integrated. I'm opposed completely!

Any data that I have found on this subject points to negative academic performance when young kids move into a more mature setting.

There is NO need to transfer the 6th graders to the high school building. 10 & 11 year old children do not need to be exposed to all that happens in high school.
