Our challenge is that all students are currently required to take eight classes. Not all students can handle the demands and stress of eight classes. Students must be able to choose a path that meets their individual needs. BHS needs to have a study hall option for its students.
The highest performing schools in the state are not only on a A/B block but also offer a study hall period for students. Blacksburg High School must have the option of a supervised study hall for its students starting as soon as the 2015-2016 school year.

I have spent this week reviewing the feedback left by students and families regarding the current schedule. These accounts confirm that the pressure of an eight class workload is significant for our community. I am now preparing a formal proposal to present to the administration.

The response to this proposal highlights a clear consensus regarding the need for more academic flexibility at our school. This momentum reinforces our position as we prepare to present these requests to the administration.

Not every student has the ability (help and computer (internet) access) at home, therefore they need a study hall option!
In order to take Debate and Forensics as a class, my student then had to take on 9 classes. It would have really been nice for this student to have a study hall in their schedule. Not that the student ever wanted to take 8 classes to begin with. Let me recap the logic here: 300 students were skipping lunch (hardly a majority of the school), so your only solution was to force everyone to take 8 classes? The least you could do for the other 900 or so students is offer them a study hall. It might also be a great apology for botching the transition to the block scheduling and not having enough of the classes students wanted to take available.
My son has a library aid period which he uses as a study hall. It is great how much he gets done.
Student aids have become a serious overpopulation problem in our school this year. This would solve that problem and would help students to use their time wisely throughout the day.
I have a child who will take 7 classes during the day and robotics at night. Nine classes is too many. While we LOVE the eight class schedule, adding robotics 2 at night will require that he either do a study hall, come to school late, or leave early, or be an aide. My first choice would be that he have the option of a study hall.
This is important! Structured study hall will help students take care of business at school. Currently there is no time to have lunch, much less meet with teachers or guidance counselors.
Please consider and approve a structured/supervised study hall for our BHS students. This type of study hall would be such a great solution to so many of our students who want or need extra help.

This is important! Structured study hall will help students take care of business at school. Currently there is no time to have lunch, much less meet with teachers or guidance counselors.
