I am astounded of where we are as a society. College students demanding that they be given things, be given "power". Power doesn't come form being white, it doesn't come be demanding it from others. It comes from hard work; it comes from effort; it comes from doing the right thing and learning a skill that the world values and is willing to pay for. I grew up in the segregated south being told by many that I would never be anything because I was black and poor. My grandparents couldn't read or write but they worked their tails off to make a living. They didn't spend their time worrying about what "the man" did or said to them. They just put their head down and worked. The 1 thing that they always told me was to get an education. They always said that "they" can take many things from you but they can never take your education and knowledge away. I worked hard to learn a skill that was sought after. I am now a successful member of society that most would say had "power". From listening to these young people, you would think that a man like me could never gain "power". Too many obstacles, too many standing in my way to deny me. BS! Stop worrying about your skin color, who you sleep with, whether there is a bathroom for trans people. Just work hard. Make something of yourself in a way that others value. Earlier in this thread someone wrote about the white employees at Lowes, Home Depot & GM as having "power". My guess is the guy, regardless of color, making $18 an hour at Lowes does not feel all that powerful. Power is not defined by getting your son or cousin a job. It is achieved by making yourself better each and every day. Not better than others but better than the person you were yesterday. Demanding that others give that to you because of your lack of ability is not the long term answer to solving your problems. Lets all stop being black, being white, being gay, being a man or woman. Why don't we all just worry about being the best person

I cringe at the idea of any more tax revenue being used to indoctrinate more misguided young people into joining the modern day Brownshirt brigades.

Maybe free tuition at all University for qualified students would be a good idea. Are we seeing this kind of insanity in countries where University entrance is determined by cognitive abilities rather than by ability to pay?

These proposals substitute politically correct mob rule for due process. The whole point of University (the Universe part of it) is to teach young people to consider a large variety of ideas and think about how they fit or don't into the kind of society that maximizes the opportunities for thriving for all people regardless or race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. When professors can't teach certain topics for fear of being fired because it might offend one of the delicate snowflakes by impinging on their dissent-free safe space, everyone loses.

Honestly, I don't believe this is "absurd" or "ridiculous" I mean, it just really doesn't sound like cry babies or asking for too much; the money aspect even seems reasonable/important because that also helps tilt the economy; it also doesn't just seem like a black/white or gay/straight deal, but ALL people. Going to a college to learn about what's going on in the actual world/having to decide where you stand with things, and encouraged to help change the world, WITHOUT this being able to be accomplished, like omg, a campus where, as a small white girl who grew up in Wisconsin, and have been homeless at one point in Philly, the idea that I wouldn't have to clench my keys while walking at night, being afraid of rape (that will also be tolerated) It's students being MAD AS HELL AND aren't GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE. It's also not a "pretty please, fantasy world so people won't pick on me" it's a demand for people to be able to be themselves without harm. Laugh all you guys want. It not only should happen, it will.

This is a perfect example of why I don't want any more of my tax dollars being wasted on providing free higher education.

Though I agree we need some work from a tolerance, respect and other aspects in this country and possibly even this campus, this takes things beyond too far. This creates essentially the environment described in the Jeremy Piven movie "PCU". Where rather than achieving equality, which is the supposed goal, the suppression and oppression of certain groups is replaced with the oppression of others. Even the worst redneck (read: Trump supporter) has the same right of expression as the most humble native american. If we create free-speech free zones (or anti-free speech zones) on campuses because we find some of that speech offensive, based on a student committee and a dean that was only approved by said students, then we further delve into this dystopian divide we find ourselves in politically and socially as it gives justification and fuels the fire of those it seeks to oppose. Yes, alternative histories (when evidence can be found to support, and this is key) should be taught. As understanding which of our founding fathers were slave owners is important. But then we should also teach about Rhode Island, and the almost Unitarian approach of Roger Williams creating a colony where people of different types mixed well, and frankly, that he was a minister who was prosecuted for preaching a faith (non-Puritan Christian). Maybe Pittsburgh place of safety against anti-semetism in the early part of our nation. Exploring the possible causes and effects of the McCoy Hatfield fued and its impacts on our culture and relevance in the two party system should then be included with both McCoy and Hatfield representation. Only picking and choosing the ones that uplift the minorities specifically listed in this petition cheapens the effort and makes it just as bad as what has been done to histories taught now.
