I'm an Oak Park graduate who believes reading is fundamental and all books within the law should be available.

Great job to all of you students for calling it like you see it and using your voices. This is racism, homophobia, and small-minded bigotry, and our students deserve better.

I’m a sex educator in Kansas City. I speak for the adults who I coach regularly that received little to no sex education and never once have they said that they are grateful their parents and schools kept them uninformed. In fact, many of them have shame and dysfunction associated with their lack of education that prevent them from having fulling intimacy with their partners. Books are the life blood of education. If a teen doesn’t want to read about about a topic, they won’t pick up the book. Censorship is a slippery slope, and those that believe having exposure to a different perspective could change a person’s mind or influence their views as a bad thing, well, they are correct only partially. In fact, they would do well to read a book or two that could influence their views and help them see that differences make this world a place worth living in. Gay and trans people exist, and Christians aren’t going to stop their kids from being gay or trans. They shouldn’t be allowed to force their agenda on schools just because they yell the loudest. Schools need to stand up to parents who try to censor students educations. Schools are not here to educate based on a political climate that surrounds them. Schools are here to encourage curiosity, to get kids to seek knowledge, and to learn about our world. Support your librarians.

This is appalling that in the 21st century in America, you would consider banning these books at a high school library. The Bluest Eye?? This is an incredibly important book and we read it at my high school in class, and in college. The Handmaid's Tale?, are you kidding? In a free society you don't get to ban works that raise questions or social critiques. If you don't like them, just don't read them yourself.

Books should never be banned. Removing books based on stories about people in protected classes is a horrible practice.

Our kids should have diverse books available to them. These books can comfort, open up dialogue, answer questions and promote acceptance. I can’t believe this petition had to be started in 2021.

I graduated from nkc in 1970. I am an avid reader. All the librarians in jr high and high school helped me find fantastic books. Non were banned. These people in the NPA can police THEIR kids all they want, but they have NO right to tell my child what she can or can't read!! That's between us.

I'm disappointed that this petition needs to be made. When I attended NKC schools, the librarians were proud that they offered "banned books". Controversial books allow critical thinking and this form of censorship disgusts me.

Reading opens us up to worlds that include everyone. When we learn about others that aren’t just like us, we may understand them a little bit better in real life. So stop with this fear mongering and placing student experiences in a “safe” little box. Reading offers hope and connection, understanding and awe at so many possibilities of not only existing but thriving as exactly how you are.
