I have 6 surfboards stored around the world; Costa Rica, Hawaii, California, France and PR because it is cheaper to buy a board then fly a board. A 50lb golf bag is free to check but a 28lb board bag cost $100 each way. this is a bit screwy. PS: I am a 1K member on 2 different airlines and earn a 6 figure income. I have money to spend and I don't use it for surfboard baggage fees!!

This is an opportunity for an airline company to win over thousands of customers by implementing some sort of surfboard storage system and charging normal rates!

Just have surfers sign a waiver that they won't file claims for board damage and provide optional, expensive insurance for those who won't.

The fees charged by airlines for surfboards has become absurd. In some cases it's costing more for baggage fees than the actual tickets, so much so it has made air travel with surfboards next to impossible for some.
