The North/South divide holds this country back and this is a glaring example of it.

Another broken promise for the North from London politicians who continue to spend the lion's share of transport infrastructure budgets on London.

Unless electrification is carried through to Stalybridge, local services to Victoria will continue to be operated by diesel trains.

Essential for Economic Development of the North, far more impact in this region than the White Elephant that is HS2 which will draw economic benefit from the North

Labour need to make a huge issue of this issue and look credible to their waning support . Transport is surely crucial to the promised Northern Powerhouse . Having lived in Germany and Italy for last 30 years it is embarrassing to see that we have to think our tram in Manchester is amazing!! when their regional cities have underground systems . Labour need to stand up for their heartlands instead of being complacent of our votes . If they carry on ignoring us they risk disappearing of the political landscape . Labour need to take a lesson from SNP and really make a big issue of this broken Tory promise.

About time we Northeners got serious about taking on the South East and London. Look at other European countries such as Germany , Italy and Spain where regional capitals are equal. We need our local MPs to stand up for us as do the SNP for Scotland . Labour ( and I have been a lifelong supporter) have been far too complacent regarding Labour voters in the North and in the Blair / Brown years didn't really do anything to correct the North/South divide .If they continue to allow The Tories to feed us stuff like Northern Powerhouse and then negate on the promises the party will die .

Why is it always the NthWest that loses out in these things? Unless the core TPE route is electrified as planned, all routes around Leeds, Manchester & Liverpool will suffer, because we will still be suffering from the same chronic rolling stock shortages as bow, which is heavily dependent on this project. I suggest that the ministers tucked away in London take a trip to this oft forgotten part of the country, to see just exactly how busy these trains are, along with the neighbouring M62 - if this was a London oriented project, there would have been no danger at all of it being postponed/cancelled.

Much needed investment - if you're serious about the North it needs to be done

Alongside electrification can we have a new high speed between Manchester and somewhere between Leeds and Sheffield and then use the planned HS2 route into Leeds & Sheffield.
This would make the cities commutable from one another, as equivalent distances in the south are. It could form part of a new high speed line between Liverpool and Hull and Newcastle freeing up capacity for much needed stopping services on existing lines.

If Manchester's and other Northern cities growth (and therefore easing of the pressure on the South East) then the North needs a massive investment in rail infrastructure, even beyond electrification.
And the programme has been paused, yet even proportionatly it is a drop in the ocean compared to investments in the south.

Rather than throw money at HS2 that only the rich and those having their tickets bought for them (e.g. MPs!), let's have something people can use to get to work here.

Much as I support the Crossrail projects, we can't be prioritising Crossrail 2 when the Leeds to Manchester line still needs upgrading. Please get your priorities right!
