Stop using the R-word

The R-word—“retard” or “retarded”—is hurtful and offensive. It was once used as a medical term, but over time, it became a slur used to insult and degrade people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Now, it’s often thrown around casually to call someone “dumb” or to joke—but those words carry real pain.
Here’s why it needs to stop:
1. It’s disrespectful and harmful.
When people use the R-word as a joke or insult, they’re reinforcing the idea that people with disabilities are less than or something to laugh at. That’s not okay.
2. It spreads negative stereotypes.
Using the R-word contributes to the stigma that people with intellectual disabilities aren’t capable or valuable. In reality, they deserve the same respect and opportunities as everyone else.
3. It hurts real people.
Many people with disabilities—and their families and friends—feel deeply hurt when they hear the R-word. It can make them feel excluded, mocked, or unsafe.
4. There are better words to use.
You can express frustration or describe something silly without using slurs. Language is powerful—use it to build people up, not tear them down.
5. Respect starts with words.
Standing up against ableism (discrimination against people with disabilities) starts with changing how we speak. Removing slurs like the R-word from everyday conversation is one small but meaningful step.
