PETITION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REGARDING TURBID WATER RELEASES INTO THE LOWER ESOPUS CREEK WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, HEREBY STATE OUR OBJECTION TO THE TURBID, MUDDY, WATER RELEASES FROM THE ASHOKAN RESERVOIR INTO THE LOWER ESOPUS CREEK. WE OBJECT TO THESE RELEASES AS A METHOD OF TURBIDITY CONTROL BY THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION (NYCDEP)THAT PROVIDES CLEAN DRINKING WATER TO NEW YORK CITY. WE URGE THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, THE DEPARTMENT WITH AUTHORITY, TO TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS: 1. REVERSE ITS DECISION TO ALLOW THESE RELEASES AS A A TURBIDITY CONTROL METHOD 2. REQUIRE THE NYDEP TO ADOPT ALTERNATIVE TURBIDITY CONTROL METHODS 3. ENSURE THAT ANY WATER RELEASES BY THE NYDEP INTO THE LOWER ESOPUS CREEK MEET ALL FEDERAL AND STATE LAWS 4. REQUIRE THE NYDEP TO REPAIR DAMAGE TO THE LOWER ESOPUS WATERSHED CAUSED BY THE RELEASES

I spent the afternoon walking along the creek and seeing the mud turned up again reminds me exactly why we started this fight. The silence from the department is frustrating but I am currently drafting a formal follow up to demand they finally take our concerns seriously.

Seeing this kind of momentum feels like a weight lifting off my chest because I remember what our creek looked like before the mud took over. I truly believed we were fighting this alone until so many of you stepped up to protect the water we rely on.

I live almost next to the creek for 30yrs, it's horrible when water is released, like chocolate milk, erroding banks, nothing serene about it anymore

property values are dropping because the creek is basically a sewer now. DEP needs to figure out a better way to dump their sludge.
