We strongly opposes Shibumi Shades on our beaches. These wind-powered canopies create constant, loud flapping and snapping noises in even moderate breezes. The noise described by users as a- 'snapping and cracking machine,' or so raucous you can't hear the ocean waves or hold a conversation. This noise disrupts the peaceful beach experience, drowns out children's calls for help, and has led to widespread complaints about it being obnoxious and a nuisance in places that allow them. Their popularity has also turned many beaches into cluttered seas of identical shades that obstruct views and alter the natural shoreline vibe. We urge officials to restrict or ban them to protect the tranquility and safety of our shared beach community.

They take up too much space and they are so noisy. I feel they belong on the beaches that are more remote. We always go to some little island areas by boat and they are fine there.
Let's keep our beach as serene as possible. We are starting to look like every other city. Let's keep something the same. Let our beach be uncool and old school.
Myrtle Beach law enforcement, beach patrol and life guards require the best visibility and line of sight possible. They do not need a more shade items obstructing their view. We the homeowners in the residential area certainly do not want these items littering our day at the beach, and the suggestion of a “test period” in our residential beach accesses is an insult.
As an oceanfront property owner on N Ocean Blvd in Myrtle Beach these contraptions are a loud nuisance for residents living in close proximity.
These large wind-powered shades take up excessive space on already crowded public beaches, limiting access for other families and making it harder for everyone to find a place to sit. Unlike traditional umbrellas, their wide footprints and required spacing effectively claim a much bigger area, reducing fair use of shared shoreline. In addition, the constant flapping and tensioning in the wind creates ongoing noise that disrupts the peaceful beach environment people come to enjoy. Public beaches should prioritize equitable space and a relaxing atmosphere for all visitors, not structures that dominate large areas and add continuous noise.
Please ban them on the beach!

Allowing wind driven shade devices on residential beaches ONLY is a worst case scenario. This unfairly targets our residential beaches and would result in a concentration of those things at arguably the most desirable beach areas in the City. Additionally, please consider compliance and enforcement, as now our Beach Patrol and Police will undoubtedly spend extra time dealing with that issue. This has been covered ad naseum, but just because Shibumis are ok for other parts of the east coast, it doesn’t mean they are right for MB. We stand highly opposed to these devices on our beaches.
