I am a certified teacher and someone who is allergic to lavender. Nobody should diffuse essential oils in public spaces, and the use of EOs is an attempt to medicate/treat children into having better behavior. This has no place in schools.

As a teacher and eo user, I feel electric diffusers have no place in the classroom. I use a diffusing bracelet and have a student that has a blend in a roller ball.

Essential oils can negate the effects of certain medications. Unless there is specific knowledge as to what medications children are on, oils should never be diffused. Such a liability to the school.

Hi Cheri! it will be sent to the school board of my local school district, along with additional information regarding the safety of using essential oils, contraindications of certain essential oils in calming and focus blends, and the liability of if a student has an adverse reaction. This is specifically for diffusing essential oils (choice made by school staff) in the classroom to "help" the students. I am not petitioning the use of the diffuser jewelry, inhalers, or roll ons used directly by the students on themselves if given to them by their legal guardian. I understand that teachers mean no harm to their students and that they want to help. Some teachers have permission from their students parents, but, depending on the type of diffuser being used, they could be covering a larger square footage than their own classroom. Especially in an open concept layout like our local elementary schools. So what is being diffused in one classroom, could actually effect kids in the neighboring classroom whose parents didn't give permission.

Essential oils are a form medicine and children should be exposed at parent's discretion only. A classroom, at teacher's discretion, is not the place to subject children to alternative medicine that could be potentially hazardous to their health. Some children may have conditions not yet diagosed!

I don't want essential oils being diffused in my children's class rooms. So many people don't have a clue how to use them safely.

though essential oils could benefit many children it's not worth the risk to those with allergies, asthma, or other medical conditions that some essential oils can exacerbate.

When I was new to using essential oils, I was given a great deal of information on how to use essential oils by my sales rep...all of which turned out to be UNsafe usage advice. I quickly learned how to safely use essential oils. I would argue that the vast majority of those diffusing in the classroom are NOT properly trained in aromatherapy (which takes hundreds of hours of study), and likely do not know what is considered safe or unsafe for the age group they are teaching. PLEASE consider that there are many people who take meds that negatively interact with essential oils. Essential oils are used for therapeutic and medicinal properties, and therefore, should be treated as a therapy or medicine...in other words, you would never use medicine on an entire class-- certainly not without parent consent! Keep in mind, a lawsuit could very well be waiting for you, should any of your students react negatively to the diffusing of essential oils in the classroom.

We don't allow medications and potential allergens to be handed out to all students in school; we should not allow essential oils to be forced onto children without parents' informed consents and permission from a medical professional.

I was very upset to find out so many teachers around here diffuse oils! With my children's health issues. Triggering seizures and interacting with medications is a very real problem. Not to mention the constant exposure which puts tremendous strain on our bodies and puts us at risk to sensitization! Most teachers use "mood altering" blends to make children more "easy to handle". NO THANK YOU.

I have a friend whose son had seizures triggered by an essential oil blend and another friend who has seizures triggered by clove essential oil.

There are too many different medical conditions that can have bad reactions to various essential oils. It is not possible to safely diffuse them in schools when there are so many different children with different medical conditions such as epilepsy, and adhd just to mention a few.

I am a substitute teacher. Just the other day a kindergarten teacher was diffusing Thieves without parental consent.

Can you tell me where this petition is going? Who is being petitioned? Thanks

this can be so dangerous if there is a child with a medical condition or if the teacher doesn't know which oils are safe for the classroom's age group.

We use essential oils at home, where I can control which ones my children are exposed to.
