Stop the planned layoff of IIT Kanpur Visitors' Hostel workers

I am a recent alumnus and of much less life or technical expertise than most here. The layoffs don't seem wrong in a business sense for an Institute having to cut corners to improve efficiency and reduce costs, but IITK was never just an institute. The canteen bhaiyyas, the gardeners, the dhobis, the SIS guards were never just workers. Cut off from the outside world we, the junta, connected and interacted with them at a personal level and they were very much part of the IITK family. This petition is proof of those emotions. I request the administration to intervene to ensure the present workers continue to be able to work at the VH as long as they can carry out their responsibilities satisfactorily.

Please work on resolving this issue between workers and administration

Atleast pay 2 or 3 months wages in advance

This is certainly Injustice to these people and we demand they're reinstated with immediate effect. IITs are respected institution of our country and they should lead by example by discarding such ill practice

I am an alumunus of IME-MBA 2013-2015 batch and personally feel that such a mass firing of workers in VH is uncalled for, reason being that they have been serving with all sincerity and dignity. What are the criteria for such things need to be very clear and not obscure. Request that their services be reinstated.

People are not figures on an excel spreadsheet

I always enjoyed the hospitality and service at the VH. I think the credit should go to the friendly staff at VH. They should be retained even if the management or contractor changes.

Its very unfortunate that instead of acting as an academic institution, IITK is acting as a greedy corporate.

I have only respect for the staff of Visitors Hostel including my recent trip as part of Alumni meet .They took such good care of my wife and I especially in the cold weather and we felt at home Dismayed at this action and trust it never happens

Efficiency is always welcome but it does not necessarily mean you have to stop being humane

This is totally unfair and against everything IIT Kanpur stands far.

i stayed at VH and extension and got excellent service. It is ironical that we fire the entire staff because we believe they don't do good work. Wonder if same can be applied to the administration who have been doing a worse job!

Rights should be protected. IITK should show good examples for fair practices, and lead.

Dear IITK administrators This is really disappointing. Why can't you insist that the existing contractor workers be employed by the new contractor? This could have very easily been built in as a clause in the contract. If it is true that the new contractor is taking bribes as deposits for the contract workers job and not paying the minimum wages, it is sufficient ground to take back the contract. Hope the sense of fairness, justice and compassion will prevail amongst you.
