Locum fees for Optometrist have been static for about 15 years. Ie around £250 weekdays, £300 weekends.
In past 3 years I only worked In practices that paid me at end of each day. I had waited over 6 months for a multiple to pay and made the decision then. I have now retired but fully supportive of raising the lot of the locum optometrist.

I have stayed in bed many times rather than work for a lower rate. Minimum £300 weekday, £350+ Saturday should be standard. Last minute booking should be extra £50-£100. If i dont get this, i dont work. Everyone needs to stick to this

It's not just locum rates that are dropping, but also the salary. The wage does not reflect the responsibility we take, nor how hard we work. There should be a cap on how many students universities take in.

Totally agree with this!!! A certain company offered me £200 for a weekdays work, I declined! As much as it s down to companies and what they offer, locums also need to stand their ground, if you get offered a rate you don't think is fair, don't work it. The more employers get used to offering lower rates and locums accepting, the lower they will continue to get. If you work hard for them to meet their end of the deal, make sure you are happy with yours!

This has long been a problem I hav always thought needs unity on out part. Big multiples need to stop degrading the value of an eye exam by charging a minimum fee. You don't see dentists doing teeth work for free, or doctors giving private diagnoses for free. Why should we?
Charging a fair amount for eye exams keeps everyone happy. If the general public are not willing to spend £25 on an eye exam then there really is something wrong.

Cannot believe the daily rate has remained static for so long and now they're trying to lower it. Agree with what many have said already, upto us as a professional collective not to accept reduced rates. However that includes newly qualified that seem to insist on undercutting their colleagues just to get the work. Good luck with this petition.

Totally agree. I do not locum for less than this anyway. We all must stand our ground on standard rates.

Put a stand against employers who are reducing your locum fees for a sight test fee lower than that by the NHS.
Totally agree! Union makes the force!
