Agree, pay to reflect responsibility & qualification. Also need to peg it against living cost. General trend has been downwards not only for locums but residents too!

Its very unfair especially if travelling far to work, costs are going up in this country so why should locum rates go down and why

I'm a resident optom. But I believe that locums should earn a decent living for the work that they do.

Its very easy to we need raise locum rates but it is not that straight forward. Most locums are only in it for the money, not the care of the patient. I was like this too. I am now a practice owner and have to balance all costs accordingly. If you are a competent optom who delivers great eyecare and are able to make sound recommendations then the practice should benefit. Then the rate of 250 weekday is reasonable... defo not any lower. But there are also some poor quality optoms too.. and these are causing rates to drop.
do a good job and there is no reason to not get paid appropriately.
We should see it from a different angle, if we want to be respected for the work we do, we should work in respectable establishments... not just multiples who stacks em high and sells them cheap! Its not about seeing about 25+ pxs a day. We need to make a stand and make our professional valuable again and deliver quality eye care. Only then can we raise the rates justifiably.

It's down to us professionals who have worked hard for many many years to increase salaries for both resident optometrists and locums. The only way this can be achieved is to stand by your fees . £250 minimum for weekends and £300 minimum for weekends. Those who accept a lower rate are devaluing the profession. I accept that it is hard to turn down a substantial amount of money but if we do not make a stand our profession will go south. You only have to look at average Optom salary reduction over the past 15 years as evidence

FREE sight tests, FREE contact lens assessments, FREE trial contact lenses, FREE fundus pics, FREE further investigative tests, FREE hardcoatings, FREE MAR coatings, FREE spectacles (BOGOFs), FREE loyalty cards points (effectively paying the patient for having a free eye examination!).... Totally absurd or what?? Highly demoralising also.
I did not study hard for 6-7 years for this. We all must put an end to this, otherwise Optometry will come to an end.
The multiples should stop devaluing the importance of an eye examination and the role of an optometrist. Charge the patient appropriately rather than worrying about gaining market share from the other companies and pleasing it's shareholders.
Otherwise, we the healthcare professionals and the patients both will unfortunately lose out in the end.

I struggle to understand how the Locum fees have decreased since I qualified, whilst the standard of living has not. How is a newly qualified optometrist worth the same as some with not only experience but an array of additional qualifications.
