This export has a far-reaching effect. It is not just the eels, whose population has declined so drastically. Otters living in freshwater rely a lot on eels as prey and so this is also effecting them. It is quite likely that the reason otters are taking more fish from domestic ponds and fish farms is that they aren't finding the wild prey. This export is effecting all freshwater biodiversity so should be stopped.

We do not seek to ban all eel fishing. Far from it, we want our rivers once again teeming with eels of all age ranges for the benefit of anglers and wildlife , as well as our natural ecosystem, rather than see all our returning elvers carted off to European or Asian fish farms.

"The moral progress of a nation can be measured in how it treats its animals" -- Mahatma Gandhi. Humans must strive to be compassionate caregivers, protectors and stewards of the planet and its beings. Helping not harming. To create an environment where all sentient beings are treated with compassion and respect. Never to die needlessly or cruelly. These vulnerable, innocent, sensitive beings have the right to live “cruelty-free” in peace.

Eels have been known to be declining since Gavin Maxwell's book 'Ring of Bright Water,' and are vital for the health of the riverine ecosystem. We want more eels!

Eels are facing enough problems in the UK without this added pressure.the export should be banned. I can't imagine anyone's livelihood suffering significantly by such a ban but the chance of repopulating more of the ponds of Britian would be a great asset.
