Why is it that protection is considered only when stocks are near extinction? The records of government in this respect - and not just of British governments - are appalling. It is no justification that some few British-based (owned?) commercial actors make money out of feeding Far Eastern populations that have outstripped their own means of sustenance.

I live very close to the tidal part of river Severn. In the 30 years that I have lived here the local elver catch has declined to such low levels that few people bother fishing for them.
