I am just amazed that sheltered workshops could be considered unnecessary and might be abolished.. My nephew has received the benefits of working in a sheltered workshop and takes great pride in earning a paycheck. His self respect depends on that job. Going to day care and sitting around are not an option.

Where do these people that work in Albany, who don't have to care for or deal with those who have special needs think that these folks are going to find a job ? The people in Albany don't care, why because they don't have disabilities and they have a job. By closing down these sheltered work environments, it is like throwing these people to the wolves. The big question is how much does New York State spend on welfare? I would think that what is spent on welfare is more costly than the cost of sheltered work environments. So basically it's okay for the state to pay for those who are to lazy to work & pop out kids like rabbits; but it's not okay for those who have disabilities to work. NO! So if New York State closes these sheltered work environments, is New York State going to find jobs for those who are going to be jobless? NO!

Workshops provide a much needed service to people who are not able to join the workforce. Without workshops, these people will not earn a paycheck.

Essex Industries employees would sit at home - there are few jobs for anyone in the North Country and they are non-exiistant for people with disabilities! At Essex Industries employees are productive and contribute to our economy. They are already working in an inclusive setting. Why have them sit home and do nothing! This is a very BAD idea!!!
Sheltered workshops are a "no brainer"! This population needs to be active and feel like they contribute. Without having a job they would have nothing to do and nothing to be proud of. What we need are more workshos in New York and every other state.
