Getting rid of sheltered work environments would be devasting to many people! Why cut from a program that makes people productive and useful?

Sheltered workshops are a vital component of the continuum of services which need to be available to meet the needs of people with developmental disabilities. More options are needed--not fewer-- to provide meaningful opportunities for everyone.

i feel that the work shop should stay open for those who need it and get jobs for the ones who can work in the community

My brother works at ARC and looks forward to going to work everyday. He is very happy there. Closing these sheltered work places is a BIG mistake. These people work hard for a very minimal rate of pay way below the minimum wage. It is not fair to take away their opportunity to contribute to their society and do the work that no one else would do!!

A letter from a concerned parent to Mr. Raymond Pierce at OPWDD: October 26, 2014 Raymond Pierce 44 Holland Avenue Albany, NY 12229-0001 Dear Raymond Pierce, On the letterhead of the OPWDD it states “Putting People First”. Please change your letterhead to indicate the group you intend to “put first” as obviously it is not our disabled. This letter is in regards to the closing of workshops for the disabled across New York. My first visit to a workshop was many years ago. I met a man in a wheel chair and an employee was teaching him a new skill. He had head trauma and a spinal cord injury from a car accident that left him completely disabled. He was about 45 years old with 3 children and a wife at home. YES, his life was totally disrupted from this accident. YES, this is a place he was going to work at for the rest of his life. It made me stop and think this could happen to me or you, your life can change overnight. But ARC gave him a reason to live and a place to go every morning and be a productive and contributing person in society. This service will no longer be available if the workshops are dismantled! I have a daughter that has worked at ARC for many years. She is so proud of what she does there and will bend anybody’s ears to tell them just exactly what she does. My daughter could never work outside the workshop and be integrated into the community. She suffers from seizures and has cerebral palsy. Seizures may come on two or three times a day. When people in the public community see a person having seizure, they run, or have no idea what is happening. Let’s think, did you ever see a person having a seizure in public, let’s say at an airport or grocery store? Probably not. But would you know what to do or be willing to get involved? Sadly, most do not! In the 50’s people with disabilities were put in a ‘closet’. Are you going to do that again, only this time the closet is a little bigger like that of the ‘day care centers’, whe

Individuals with developmental challenges have a life long need to assist them not only in an structured environment at all times to build who they are skill or career wise, but it builds their Integrity, Character, Self-Esteem, feelings of a successful accomplishment and desire to be professionals, just as other typical professionals in an Corporate Company and or Government. If they have a will to be and want to be professionals, even though in a environment that is designed specifically to their occupation, let them obtained that. The companies that request or contract with Sheltered Workshops would not contract with Individuals who are DD if the work could not be accomplished. If any change need to occur I plead that you increase the wages for the excellent and hard work that they do accomplish and complete.

I think it would be devestating to my son's mental & physical will being to close the workshop where he has worked for 20 years. He is very happy working at the Murray Center in Cortland, NY.
