Our son attends Wayne ARC in Newark, NY. This program is vital to his well-being and success in life. If this program were to be taken away from him, as well as others with similar needs, it would have a negative impact on his over-all quality of life. Please think long and hard before pursuing this action.

The closure of these sheltered work environments would seriously hinder the handicap population. I work in an ARC group home, and i know that our folks seriously love going to work and feel a huge sense of accomplishment. Please dont close these places, this is a huge part of out folks lives...

This would be a great injustice to all that attend these programs, this is their life and gives them the opportunities to do what they can for themselves and to help them feel good for themselves.

Don't close the workshops. I have worked here for 10 years and I have to work and I can't get a job anywheres else.

These work centers give individuals a routine where they can feel safe to learn, be creative while encouraging them to be able to be all they can be. Then there are individuals there that can not work in the community. They don't adjust to the smallest of changes well. They have severe problems that result in behaviors that have put staff in the hospital, some have resulted in them needing showers as they smear body fluids all over themselves and others, thrown furniture and any other objects they can get their hands on, stripped all their clothes off. Staff being told to not document everything and paint a pretty picture of a bad situation. Don't tell people that you've had your hair ripped out, clothes torn, been bit, or that you're black and blue all over. These are documented as individual having an aggressive and or verbal behaviors. Where are these individual going to be? If they are at a job site and have their behavior they would be in jail. The agency would more than likely have a law suet to deal with.

Folks involved are so proud to be working, please don't take that away from them. From my point of view life has taken enough away from them however they are the happiest people I have ever met. Dont take that joy and pride from them.

A statement from a concerned parent (who is also reaching out to all local legislatures): My daughter, Diane, is one of approximately 335 individuals currently receiving prevocational services in the sheltered workshop program operated by ACHIEVE/Country Valley Industries. This program provides her with the most appropriate and effective opportunities and services commensurate with her needs, abilities and disabilities. She is happy and productive in this environment. The elimination of the sheltered workshop will leave my daughter with no viable alternative of employment. This will result in her staying at home. The options of community habilitation and day habilitation would have a negative psychological impact on her. Her work at Country Valley Industries provides her with meaningful, gainful employment and an opportunity to develop social outlets with others in the community which is her right as a citizen. Why is my daughter, as one of many other citizens who are most vulnerable in our communities, losing the opportunity of successful sheltered workshop employment? It is not realistic to eliminate the sheltered workshop program for a proposed idealistic program which will be more expensive than that being promoted. Robert W. Salankiewicz

By maintaoning workshops, we are enhancing the quality of life for those who would not be capable of worling competively. By keeping the workshopps, we can enhance the individuals self esteem and provide opportunitirs that promote abilities.s
