Subject: Opposition to the Cancellation of Local Elections in May 2026

We, the undersigned residents of Nuneaton and Bedworth, write to express our strong opposition to any proposal to cancel the local elections scheduled for May 2026.

Local elections are a cornerstone of democratic life. They provide residents with a regular, meaningful opportunity to hold elected representatives to account, to express their views on local governance, and to influence the direction of their community. Cancelling these elections would undermine these fundamental democratic principles and would not be in the spirit of open, accountable, and representative local government.

The postponement or cancellation of elections risks silencing local voices at a time when many residents feel it is more important than ever to be heard. Regardless of the administrative, financial, or political challenges that may exist, democracy should not be treated as optional or expendable. The right of residents to choose their representatives at the ballot box must be protected.

We are particularly concerned that cancelling the May 2026 elections would:
•Deny residents their democratic right to vote and be represented
•Reduce transparency and accountability within the Council
•Set a troubling precedent for future local democratic processes
•Weaken public trust in local government and decision-making

We therefore urge you, as Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, to oppose any move to cancel the May 2026 local elections and to commit publicly to ensuring that the voices of local people are heard through the democratic process.

Democracy works best when it is consistent, inclusive, and respected. We ask that you stand up for these values on behalf of the residents you serve.

No Council or Government should take the publics right to vote in any local or general elections, cancelling/ postponing because this is present Government has shown inadequacy in looking after it's own people. This government have allowed an invasion of some of the world's unwanted, we, especially women and girls have been put at risk. Our PM has concentrated on the Ukraine rather than here.
