This is senseless barbarism at its worst. How about we teach our youth to respect ALL life? It's almost like they might grow up to be educated, wise, and compassionate adults!

Because there are no laws protecting animals from harm, the world will never exercise compassion, and the planet certainly needs a huge dose of it nowadays. A nation is judged by the way it treats it's animals.

As another commentator correctly observes squirrels "have spatial memorization and recognition skills that rival chimpanzees." Moreover, it is beyond morally reprehensible to take any creature's life -- as part of some contest, to be nothing other than one more carcass tallied with however many others to win a some prize. You don't take lives in order to win a contest! And as highly inappropriate messages go, this is among the absolute worst to convey to young people. There are any number of ways for a fire department to raise funds -- raffles, baking/cooking contests, an essay contest to promote fire safety, etc., that don't involve slaughtering innocent and highly intelligent creatures.

11 states allow squirrels as pets but in other states ignorant yahoo's are allowed to shoot these highly intelligent creatures. It's time to evolve, these animals have spatial memorization and recognition skills that rival chimpanzees.

The volunteer fire department needs to find a nonviolent method to raise money! Have mercy on the innocent squirrels! Go to a firing range if you "need" to shoot your guns!
