My son attends Ramstein Elementary School and we have had many issues this year with other children on the bus, and there has been nothing more than a "stern talking to" which has helping nothing. Our buses have 30-40 kids on them, ages 5-18, and the bus ride is an hour long. It is ridiculous to expect one adult to concentrate on driving a bus AND deal with the students. It is unsafe because of bullying, but also for security reasons in a foreign country.

Lets finally get this issue addressed and protect those being bullied. There is no excuse for letting a bully roam free to terrorize whoever they want w/o consequences. Its time for action...

I had to have my son's bus changed because he was being bullied physically and verbally.

I don't have anyone on a school bus but I am appalled that this is happening in a relatively small community. Fitting all school transport with a recording camera should go a long way towards alleviating these problems. I don't believe it is right to put the responsibility on the driver...he/she is focused on the safety of all on board and that is an awesome responsibility already. In the absence of a responsible adult to monitor every trip, would it be possible to have a couple of MPs board the bus on a totally ad hoc basis? I don't know the rules governing MPs off post so that might not be feasible. The fear of 'being caught' on camera or in person might be enough to stop the bullies, especially if it is then followed up with their sponsor.
I also think the school personnel already have enough to do to keep the children safe on their premises and to carry out their primary duty..to teach!
Please give this issue serious consideration before a worse tragedy occurs.

Maybe we as parents should be allowed on the bus to monitor the bus. I would gladly volunteer.

I am a school bus driver in Omaha, NE. Due to special circumstances and a lot of boat rocking, I was granted an aide to help with ONE student who needs particular attention and patience.
Her presence on the bus has not only improved, immensely, the behavior of the one student, but her vigilance has also improved the behavior of ALL the students on the bus.
My days are far less stressful. I am able to concentrate FULLY on the ROAD and the safe operation of the bus. The children are no longer stressed out either. Any issues that develop are seen or heard by the aide/monitor well before it comes to my attention.
I never allowed bullying in the first place but, as the DRIVER of a moving vehicle FULL of CHILDREN, I am NOT in a position to hear and see everything that happens on the bus, much less really DO anything about it except damage control.
An aide/monitor has made all the difference for both the children and myself. It has made a safer environment possible for all of us.
She used to be a school bus driver as well. We both believe there should be at least one monitor on EVERY school bus!!

My child has been bullied each year and although my concerns were addressed, these children were allowed to ride the school bus without any disruption while my child was afraid and shoned for reporting the incident.
