Stop MBL/SBG in Moscow Schools

I can remember this being tried in California over 50 years ago, and it was a disaster then. Not in favor of trying again now!

Coming from a school system that would pass children intentionally this is not surprising. The fact it came with a paycheck is not surprising. Our children’s future would be sold on a whim and without vote or discussion. This is nothing short of illegal. We, the people who pay for this system should have been a part and the fact you would fire teachers who do not agree only solidifies the urgency this should be reversed

Coming from a school system that would pass children through intentionally this is not surprising to see them adapt this system. If this continues, I will place my child in charter school, private school or have them homeschooled. As a person who pays taxes for my child’s public education, I have a say and I disagree wholeheartedly. I will pull my child from the public school system and will encourage others to do the same as the school district loses money for each empty seat.

I believe that signing this petition is the right thing to do because 1) Standards-based grading does not prepare students for college. In college, concepts are approached sequentially, grades are generally letter-based, and deadlines are final, with few opportunities for re-takes. Standards-based grading would leave Moscow's students without an adequate set of tools with which to approach the college environment. 2) The previous system worked well for me and a number of friends who I have talked to. This does not mean that there isn't room for improvement, but it is always best to be cautious when making significant changes to a system which already works. 3) I have heard from some of my friends still in the Moscow school system, and others in the Moscow community who I respect. Not a single one of them seems to be having a positive experience with standards-based grading. 4) Greg Bailey and the school board have shown a careless disregard for the importance of public engagement in the process of educating our community's children. When any new educational method or process is implemented forcefully and idealistically without adequate community involvement, the result is not education, but rather an educational experiment. Education cannot be approached as an experiment. It is a fundamentally human process that must be designed and conducted on a human level if it is to be successful.

Saying no means saying yes to whole lot more!

It is time for transparency in the rationale behind this radical shift in the evaluation of students. There is no room for concealing motives or falsifying research claims. The primary stakeholders, namely the students, parents, and teachers, have been ignored or bullied when they have raised questions and concerns, and this must stop.

As a parent, I am concerned that this is going to cause this whole generation of Moscow students to forfeit some aspects of their future. What is the problem that is being solved? The system seemed to be working well as it was last year. Small tweaks and teacher empowerment seem important to prevent widespread disrutpion. Please change back to the previous system.

In regards to the merit of the concept system, I think it works well in some classes, specifically foreign language studies. While taking 4 years Spanish, I struggled with some skills more than others, such as speaking in subjunctive tense for example, and the concept system allowed me to take time to develop those skills and let my grade later reflect that once I acquired them, as opposed to only giving me a single chance and deadline. However, in classes such as English where the curriculum is much more chronological (the class must move past Oedipus Rex and onto another work at some point), the concept system does not apply well and I would hate to see those classes lose their ability to cover a wide range of content in order to facilitate students’ concept re-tries.

I am a student at MMS. I hate it so much. It makes zero sense to me. Please change it.

Can’t believe this kind of grading is even being thought about, I am not a test subject, I am a student! I care about my success and the success of those who come after me.

While some of the language has a harsh tone. I share a deep concern with others about the agenda described herein, and want to see this agenda reversed immediately.

Uh yeah standards based sucks

This sounds sneaky and dishonest using lies and manipulation to avoid parents and the public. It appears they are covering their backsides because they are failing to educate. Bring back the good schools of the past and getcridbif this deception.

Really quick and simple statement to make this a little easier to digest: moving to this system (which is in place at the Middle School Level) will entail grading on a universal 4 point scale. This means that unless your child is able to demonstrate 100% mastery of a topic (this is nearly impossible), they will be getting the equivalent of a 75% (C) on their high school transcript. Average kids don’t go to nice colleges. C means average. Is your kid average?

Mastery education that does not provide a letter grade when every college in the country is starting to not look at traditional SAT/ACT test scores and are simply basing enterance on high school GPA and extra curricular activities is just plain asinine. Telling children that they have as many chances to accomplish something does not prepare them for the real world they will soon be joining. When you fail a college test you don't get to try again. You just get sent home with nothing. That is how the world works step up or step out.

Home schooling is going to grow.
