There are three sycamore trees on the corner of Bonhill Rd. and Walther Way in Los Angeles, CA 90049 which are under consideration for immediate removal by a private contractor. However, these three trees are protected by city LAW and we are vehemently opposed to their removal.

  • MOST IMPORTANTLY SYCAMORE TREES are protected by LAW.
  • Because of their scale, prominence to the skyline, removing the trees would be a major loss to the character and beauty of the neighborhood landscape
  • The trees are a prominent existing landmark to the street.
  • The removal would significantly change bucolic character of the neighborhood, i.e, the natural wooded look and character.
  • Compatibility, height, scale, bucolic compatibility, character of the neighborhood, significance to the skyline are key words.
  • The contractors say they will be replacing with 12 small trees, but we are interested in the character and prominence that these beautiful trees which add to the skyline and the new trees that they are suggesting as replacements are ONLY guaranteed for 3 years and do not add to the skyline.

Special thanks to Samantha and Miki Sachs! Thank you so much for your support!

I never imagined that so many of you would care about these sycamores as much as I do. Seeing your comments pouring in about the character of our neighborhood makes me realize this is far bigger than just one person trying to protect a few trees.

The native sycamore trees provide many ecosystem services in addition to sole economic and aesthetic benefits. The trees provide a cooling effect to local infrastructure, habitat for birds and capture dirt and dust that would otherwise remain in the air - not to mention the fact that they are fire resistant, which is why it's crucial to maintain as many as possible now.

These trees are well established, well cared for, and an important asset in the neighborhood providing greenery and a little bit of dappled shade. Please do not let the owner strip the lot of healthy trees of a rare size.

It will take decades to get new trees to the size of the current Sycamores on that property. The new developer likely wants to skirt around the law protecting these mature trees in order to build a property-enveloping McMansion that stretches right up to the fence lines. Let's not allow that at the expense of our beautiful neighborhood, please.

Please obey the law and do not remove those beautiful and natural works of art enjoyed many times a day by neighbors and drivers through the vicinity. Sarah Manson

Please stop removal of large mature trees that add to beauty of our neighborhood. When we remodeled our home we designed around several existing large trees to maintain the beauty of the skyline and the wooded nature of our street. Please encourage our neighbors to do the same. We need large beautiful leafy shade trees both for the ambiance of neighborhood and privacy.

The new home can easily be built without destroying these protected trees. Two are on the property's front perimeter and the 3rd is in the back of the planned house.
