Sign this petition to let PECO and the Pennsylvania Utilities Commision know that you oppose PECO's devasting “upgrade” plan which includes the complete elimination of over 120 trees and draconian pruning of many more, leaving them grotesque, misshapen stubs.

(NOTE: After you sign this petition, you will be asked to donate money to "support our cause." That is actually a request from iPetition to donate money to them to run this website. Be advised that such donations do not go toward the Save Our Tree Canopy group.)

Yes, we may acknowledge the need for improved energy infrastructure, but not the one they propose. They need to move the utilities underground in Swarthmore. That is the only real way to reduce power dips and outages, especially in the face of increased severe weather due to climate change. That is the way to enable more street trees without annual arboreal hack-jobs by Asplundh and PECO. That is the way to maintain the beauty of our community, prevent excessive water run-off, enhance safety, and Save Our Tree Canopy!

This petition is open to the entire Swarthmore community, whether you live, work, study or play here.

The petition reached a threshold that mandates a formal response from the utility commission. I am currently drafting a letter to the department heads to request a meeting regarding underground infrastructure alternatives.

I have received word that my two 30 yr old maples originally slated for removal will be pruned instead. PECO has been pruning these street trees periodically for years and still the trees look pretty good. But the wires need to be buried, once and for all. Now is the time. Federal infrastructure money available????

It’s outrageous that as an affected property owner we STILL can get an answer as to which 3 trees in our yard are slated to come down. The lack of transparency, in addition to their refusal to grind stumps so we can replant is unacceptable!

Much of Swarthmore has been able to have this upgrade without this drastic tree removal, pruning, leaving stumps, and installation of massive poles. Should not be done for the rest of Swarthmore. One large tree with leaves provides oxygen for 4 adults a day and removes pollutants.

As an engineer, I would like to see for myself the technical analysis and rationale that is being used to justify this action. If the supply voltage and current is not changing, I do not understand the need.

We are very upset and concerned about this plan and what it would do to our town. Let's fight this as a community! Swarthmore isn't 'nothing' without its trees, but its much much less appealing as a place to live without them.

There is no need to cut down 124 large, healthy trees. Trees and utility wires have coexisted for over a hundred years in Swarthmore. PECO is being lazy in their “solutions.” Bury the lines as required in Maryland. Don’t plea financial hardship as one of the wealthiest corporations in the United States.

Find a different solution than cutting our trees down. How about burying the lines? This is an historic neighborhood and the trees are as important as electricity. Find a happy medium

Way to ruin a beautiful community! Thanks PECO!
