Stop Ousting of Pier Road Historic District Shops in Jekyll Island

We have enjoyed wandering the Pier Road shops for many years. The owners and employees of those shops have provided an eclectic and interesting mix of tourist shopping and quality gifts and handmade items. They deserve to continue to earn their livelihood and serve their loyal customers. New visitors to the island also deserve the opportunity to experience this unique and historic environment. Can they not leave one thing on the island alone? I have been coming to Jekyll since 1976 and have watched as the very things that make us love the island and be able to afford to visit have been taken over by things that make it more like just another high-priced coastal island. Please reconsider making these changes. Let Jekyll remain a jewel unlike all the other cookie cutter destinations. We love Jekyll for what makes it different, please leave us some of those things!!!!

This action is abrupt, callous and notably lacking in transparency. If JIA has good reason for it, make that reason public!

Please let the shops stay! I love being able to shop there when I visit!

If we wanted a tourist trap, we'd go to Panama City.

I am a business owner and this would never happen anywhere else in the state…

This is the sort of thing that makes me think that I may not return to Jekyll or at least only drive through. Once a nice, homey place, it turn by degrees into a commercial nightmare and a tourist trap.

Don’t shut these businesses down!

This move is not in keeping with the spirit of civilian-led Georgian government, disrespects the citizenry and their livelihoods, and does a disservice to the spirit of commerce. At the very least, those being evicted deserve recompense or additional time to make alternative arrangements feasible. I am very disappointed by this move; this may be how things would be done in New York or California with short notice, where Governments act like feudal lords without check, but we here in Georgia should be better than that, as a matter of respect and integrity. Do better.

Without the shops at the resort there is no reason to visit. Go see the Turtle Center then head to The Market and spend your money there.

These chops are lovely and one of the nice activities that people can do when coming to the Island today I just bought a beautiful souvenir. It would be so sad to see all of this go away.
