This is a terrible decision for Historic Jekyll Island. People come to the island planning part of their visit to these shops. As a local I shop at there wonderful, unique places to get gifts to send on to family in the Northeast and England. Please do not allow these wonderful shops and employees to lose their livelihoods!

Looks like a power grab for friends of the State of Georgia and JIA. To do away with stores the average Georgian can shop at and turn it in to upscale shopping at higher cost to average Georgian.Way to go island leadership!!

Don’t close the shops and take the people’s livelihoods from them. The shops/people are part of Jekyll Island and enjoyment to walk over the grounds and visit.

The Pier Road shops are the only shops that I truly enjoy on the island. They carry unique items unlike other shops that just carry regular souvenir stuff you can get anywhere. This action was abrupt, callous and notably lacking in transparency and not fair to these shop owners who have served the island and visitors well over the years. If JIA has good reason for it, make that reason public! I am still saddened by the loss of the bookstore. The island is using its unique appeal and turning into just another tourist location. So sad…..

There is absolutely no reason for this to be happening. The shops add to the quaint historical feeling. The do not detract from it at all. This is an underhanded injustice against these people's rightful American dream. This broad swiping scheme needs action from the people and Gov. Kemp.

They are a vital part of the quaintness of the historic district. Leave them alone. Don't build a splash pool use the money for upkeep of the old village..

We have been coming to Jekyll for almost 50 years. We have watched in dismay as the changes in the last several years have been instituted, starting under Hooks Jones. These changes only benefit greedy developers who have been enabled by their cohorts on the JIA. Nothing has been brought to Jekyll that was not available on St. Simon's and the other nearby places that had already been overdeveloped. Until the developers moved in Jekyll was a unique and enchanting place, offering a slower pace and reminders of the past in a quaint and pleasant setting. This latest move kicking out the people who earn their livings from the Pier Road shops is just another nail in the coffin of the uniqueness that was Jekyll. Other than delivering profit into the pockets of more developers, I doubt that JIA can offer any justification for this change. This decision should be revisited immediately and the current leases reinstated. Leave this small piece of what Jekyll used to be intact for those of us who remember and appreciate it and give future visitors the chance to experience it.
