The Haliburton Loophole was created in 2005 at the order of Dick Cheney (former chief executive of a natural gas company). It exempts hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") from the Safe Drinking Water Act, in short, allowing gas companies to use dangerous chemicals during drilling. There are numerous instances of fracking causing massive damages to people and the environment. Methane leaks from drills across the country caused thousands of people (Dimock, Pennsylvania to Texas to Colorado) to face the problem of flammable drinking water. Toxic pollutants being released into the air puts workers at drill sites in grave risk of everything from asthma to cancer. Repetitive drilling is causing earthquakes in Oklahoma. People are being hurt, both financially and physically, and the government is allowing these companies to continue unchecked. A bill that would close this loophole is still in committee: H.R. 1921. Named the Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals Act of 2013, it will close the loophole and force companies to comply to EPA regulations. It will force natural gas companies to clean up their act and reveal all chemicals used in the drilling process to the government. Time is of the essence. Drills are expanding rapidly, and once the damage is done it is nearly impossible to fix. The people of America will not stand for exploitation by large, wealthy companies!
