I believe schools should not give out certificates and medals to children with high attendance. I believe this is sending the wrong message to children who have been ill or who have ongoing needs to have regular school absences. If a school has concerns with a child's attendance it should contact the parents and not put pressure/shame/disappointment onto the children in this way.
I wholeheartedly support this petition. My son was off school three times in year one.. each time for five days. We were sent poor attendance letters and it was pointed out to him that he would not receive a certificate and a pencil at the end of term. He was despondent and felt he had let his class down.
Not being sick is not something that should be rewarded.
